Green Home

Overhaul of a historic home in Park City

About This Project

The Green Home is an overhaul of a historic home in the heart of Park City, Utah. Built in 1898, it was originally a miner’s shack. PJ Builders lifted the house to accommodate a new foundation, basement and a garage and they added a new rear addition. This created space for four bedrooms and bathrooms, three fireplaces and a private deck and outdoor fireplace while nearly tripling the original square footage. The original fir ceiling was exposed, cleaned and sealed then reinforced with white steel beams and additional rafters.  The original front facade was left intact, hiding a modern home within the historic exterior. The skylight in the loft drenches two levels with natural light.

The remodeled home now features many modern design elements that seamlessly blend the old with the new.  Clear polished steel railings, oiled rift-sawn white oak handrails and sandblasted glass forms the ethereal staircase which connects the main floor to the loft. The fireplace is clad with honed stone. Bespoke furniture and oak cabinets serve multiple functions, making the small interior look and feel spacious.

In the kitchen, honey white carrara marble countertops and island give a classic contrast to the sand-cast white bronze hardware and steel appliances. The entryway features beadboard trim and leads you into the great room where a skylight floods the home with natural light and helps to showcase the white oak floors and white walls.

In the dining area, two Alvar Aalto pendant lights, a vintage Jens Risom teak table and a woven plastic African rug on the wall add warmth to the contrasting white room. A blue Jasper sofa, Eames Management chair and two vintage molded side chairs furnish the loft.  The french doors in the master bedroom lead to a private deck and terraced garden. Oiled rift-sawn white oak cabinets, oak beams and the satin-finish aspen ceiling add warmth to this space featuring a honed Brazilian black granite fireplace.  A translucent glass bridge walkway connects the loft to the master bedroom suite.

This home is a beautiful example of how PJ Builders does not just build homes, we create art in the form of living spaces.
